Topics
The Programme Planning Committee for IUISC 09 welcomes proposals, in abstract form, for conference papers on a variety of topics under the conference theme of “The Changing Service Relationship”. This broad theme will allow for the consideration and exploration of a wide range of issues and topics contextually set within a rapidly changing higher education sector and a changed economic environment.
Libraries and IT Departments are increasingly seeking to re-balance and re-define their service portfolios to reflect current and emerging needs. These changes are being driven by:
1. The changing service expectations of students in an increasingly online environment.
2. The changing service expectations arising from major changes in institutional approaches to teaching and learning.
3. The changing service expectations arising from major investment and commitment to research.
4. The increasing impact of institution and sector-wide strategic initiatives.
Given this conference programme context, examples of topics welcome include:
• New service initiatives supporting teaching and learning and research
• Reconfiguring learning spaces, information commons, research commons etc.
• Virtual vs. physical support (helpdesks, information desks, reference services)
• Mediated vs. unmediated service provision
• Information literacy and IT literacy needs, expectations and service responses
• Complexity of information landscape and role of resource discovery - navigation, tools, catalogues etc.
• Impact of institutional repository developments and future development/leverage opportunities
• The impact of customer service trends such as prosumerism, crowd-sourcing etc. on service development
• Digitisation, preservation, data curation and associated technical, metadata, administrative and copyright issues
• The application, integration and impact of Web 2.0 and social networking technologies
• Cloud computing
• Impact and demand created by ubiquitous broadband
• Cyber-infrastructure required to support e-research
• Mobile technologies
• Open and community source solutions vs. buy and build
• Software as service
• Collaboration tools and portals
• Desktop service provision including imaging to staff and students
• Unified communication applications
• Identity management initiatives
The emphasis of proposals should be on reflection and evaluation rather than merely on describing what has happened. Proposals encouraging active participation by delegates will be given preference.
