General information on Kilkenny

Famous as an international centre for contemporary art & culture, the County of Kilkenny is also located in an ideal central location of Ireland - providing a perfect stopover for travellers between Dublin and Cork, Rosslare and the West.

Dominated by superb ancient buildings culminating in the magnificent Kilkenny Castle, it brims with character. Kilkenny Castle The Castle provide guided tours, an art gallery, a cafe during the summer season, extensive pleasure grounds and a well equipped outdoor play area for children. The ground floor which has an audio-visual room is wheelchair accessible. The Castle also includes the Butler Art Gallery.

Saint Canice`s Cathedral Completed in 1285, it is the second longest cathedral in Ireland and has a round tower in close proximity which is from an even earlier date. Also on display are rich and varied mediaeval carvings. Open all year round.

Jerpoint Abbey 12th Century, lauded as the finest Cistercian monastic ruins in Ireland. A visitor centre, accessible to the disabled, exhibition and guide service. Car park provided.

Rothe House Museum A 16th Century Tudor Town House of great charm. Features a fine period costume display, frequent visiting exhibitions in addition to the building itself. Dunmore Caves A well developed show-cave, it consists of a series of chambers. Exhibition centre, guide service.

Kilkenny Design Centre Opposite the Castle, the Kilkenny Design Centre has a comprehensive stock of local and national crafts on display and for sale. Also has an excellent cafe.
